I would love to spend an extended period of time in Scotland having spent two weeks there during Spring in 2016. I was with a small group of artists on a painting holiday and we visited some lovely seaside villages: Pittenweem (fabulous little chocolate shop with cafe); St Monan’s (Lobster tails and chips by the sea) and St Andrews (Golf course, cathedral/castle ruins and a couple chocolate shops worth checking out. One of them was near a wonderful little cheese shop filled to the brim with all sorts of tasty morsels). Yes, I’m a little food focused however these places are also great for walking and exploring, plenty of history to soak up in Scotland.

In the highlands and on the Banffshire coast we stayed in Gardenstown and walked the hills to see the ruins of an old church, nearby is the village of Crovie which is mainly inhabited by holiday makers. Spectacular sunsets and a perfect location for getting away from it all. We drove back to Edinburgh the long way, through Cairngorm National Park with stops in Inverness and Pitlochry. If you’re into hiking, history and photography you will love this part of Scotland.

Scotland is an amazing place, I hope all goes well for your son and future visits.

The Wallace Memorial is an unusual looking structure. I don’t know if I would have done all 246 stairs. I could so empathize with your blogger heart aching to see more. I’m sure you’ll find opportunity to do that visiting your son at university.

Scottish universities have a very good reputation, so it looks as if your son has made a wise choice. And lucky you having the excuse to visit so often – it’s a fabulous country to explore. So much history, and an amazing variety of scenery (and don’t believe the people who tell you that the lowlands are not worth visiting!)

Such a difficult dilemma to be torn between visiting universities and wanting to see (just a little bit more please!) of Scotland’s immensely varied and fascinating offerings. Luckily, it sounds like you’ll have plenty of future trips! I loved the definition of Victorian Gothic and was happy to hear that the folks behind the monument had added a special exhibit featuring some of Scotland’s notable women. History, as you noted, isn’t all about dead, white men! Anita
