Hi Rachel, I enjoyed reading your comments – sorry you didn’t visit us this trip, perhaps next time. We are also members of the ILH (Safed Inn) and like most of the ILH hostels, we have both dormitory rooms and private rooms. You can find reviews in Trip Advisor under “speciality lodging” – unfortunately, they don’t have a “hostels” section. Happy Travels.

I’ve not stayed in a hostel yet but I won’t rule it out. As long as there aren’t any drunken people around. Good tips.

I haven’t yet stayed in a hostel and suspect at this age they won’t start calling out as an option one day. But I thoroughly enjoyed this report of your experience and am glad you were adventuresome enough to try them out!

I met a woman in Germany in her 70s who traveled extensively and always stayed in hostels. She made sure her accommodations included a private bedroom.
It is interesting to read about your experience in Israel hostels. Hostels in the U.S. also have some private rooms nowadays, though I think they refer to them as couples rooms or family rooms--not too many singles stay in them. I would imagine that the single rooms in many European hotels would complete with the cost of a private room in a hostel.

Nice one Rachel!

I haven’t commented recently, but I have enjoyed reading your posts about Israel. I would have loved to go, but I have to be practical and choose one TBEX conference to go, and for me this year, it’s Ireland!

Believe you me, I’m older than I look and have experience of people vomiting, and going crazy in a hostel room. And I really can’t and don’t want to do all that stuff again!

However, every now and then, I target hostels but specific ones – boutique hostels. They’re usually more expensive, and sometimes equivalent to the price of a hotel, but have more of a social aspect to it. For example, when my husband and teen went to Portugal last year, we booked into a boutique hostel in Lisbon and Porto. In both cases, our son had his own private room, and we had our own private luxury “suite” and bathroom too.

I don’t actually mind sharing a living space or kitchen (since I never cook on holiday anyway), but it’s the bathroom situation that I don’t like. If there’s more than 2 or 3 people using it, it’s bound to be yucky, and you always have to queue….!
